i found a recipe of traditional way of baking Ji Dan Gao which requires only eggs, flour, baking powder and water and steamed in a bamboo steamer (the one that they use to make pao- the one that you can normally see in chinese shops).

i have the confidence that my cake will come out perfectly because i followed every steps given in the recipe and also i found a fruit basket under the kitchen table (a bamboo basket that we used to put fruits) and used it for steaming.

i mixed 3 eggs with sugar and beat them in high speed until fluffy- very fluffy, and pour in the water. i used 7up (one can also use ice-cream soda or milk or just plain water) to get more air in my batter, so that the cake will rise beautifully. then, i put in the flour with baking powder and mixed them slowly with spatula, instead of using the beater so that the air in the batter will still be maintained.

then, i poured the batter into the bamboo-fruit-basket-turned-into-bamboo-steamer lined with greaseproof paper and i sprinkled sugar over batter in the shape of cross so that the cake will crack open to form flower shape, and it will be a beautiful-perfect cake.

i steamed the cake in a covered wok for 25 minutes. after 25 minutes, i opened the cover and saw my cake was still flat..no flower and not even a bud..

i took the cake out of the wok and let it cool. then, i turned the cake over to take the greaseproof paper out. after i took the paper out, i can see a lot of hardened bubbles, and in every bubble, THERE’S UNDISSOLVED FLOUR trapped inside them. NIGHTMARE! i cant imagine my cake turned out to be like this. Huhu~

i am so disappointed and sadly, I went to bed.

this morning, my neighbour’s daughter came to my house and kakak let her try my disastrous cake. i was preparing my breakfast and suddenly i heard the little girl said, Lagi.. haha! she wants more.. i cant believe that she said that..poor little girl..
